The Bucket Fountain (of Love)

by Geraldine Quinn

/

about

Melbourne-based rock cabaret idiot and trashbag Geraldine Quinn's love song to Wellington, New Zealand (2014).

lyrics

Eleven months and sixteen days have scattered since I saw your face
I know that we will meet again. The only question’s where and when
Love is like a man-made waterfall - it moves poetically,
While moistening a public mall with power made kinetically

I’m no Anita Ekberg and our love is not La Dolce Vita
But if there is a water feature I would choose to meet you by
There’s only one location suited, in a street named after Cuba
The southern hemisphere. We’ll find each other here

Oh won’t you

Meet me at the Bucket Fountain
Count the days ‘til we’re together
Rain or shine, I’ll be there – though we’ll probably get windy weather
In Wellington I left my heart
And Wellington is where they keep the bucket
The bucket fountain of love

No other font will do – I cannot choose a damp place willy nilly
The one in Trevi – or Melbourne’s Water Wall. Not even Piccadilly
How could another monument compete with one that’s so endearing
Dazzling with its coloured scoops – and somewhat cheeky engineering

I cannot stand our time apart like some can’t stand this local landmark
But beauty is subjective and love is basically defective
If we get wet, it’s only tears I’m cryin’ as the winds are changin’
‘Til you’re here with me, ankle-deep in hobbit wee

Why don’t you…

Meet me at the Bucket Fountain
Nobody would dare to spoil it
Unless Elijah Wood turns up and fails to find a public toilet
In Wellington I left my heart
And Wellington is where I’ll see
The buuucket – the bucket foooountain of love...

Meet me at the Bucket Fountain
We’ll eat something high-falutin’
Soy chai latte with some cloves,
And carob mud cake with no gluten
I’ll see you once again, I know
Deep in Aotearoa’s bucket – the bucket fountain…of love
